Meditation Monday: You are Here, You Might as Well Find a Way to Enjoy Your Time

This has been the coldest winter that I can remember in Illinois, not to say there haven’t been other cold ones.  I’m getting tired of the cold.

My kids seem to be enjoying the weather, since they have had more snow days than ever, which has been an enchanting adventure in itself.   I have been keeping myself from going crazy by finalizing the details for our summer vacation, and working on some new work projects.

It helps to be contemplating warmer days ahead when the temperature is about to fall to -50F (again)!  I’m beginning to have a lot more compassion for folks living in Alaska.

My meditation for this week is:  I am here, I might as well find a way to enjoy this situation.

  1. Oh yes, the days when I can’t find the energy to get up, when I ask myself is this really how I am going to live through my forties… then I think, hey, it could be worse… so I give thanks and just as you, my dear friend, say to myself: ” I am here, I might as well find a way to enjoy this situation.” sending you a warm hug, Alexandra

  2. Great advice, Karen! Hope it warms up for you soon. We’ve been going between -30C at worst, -20 othertimes and +3 to +7. So we get melting, with slush, then it becomes an ice field, making the sidewalks tricky to get around on, then it’s back to melting, a coupld of times with rain. Weird, but not unexpected. Just not what we’ve been used to in the past. ~ Linne

    1. Thanks Linne! I had a feeling this would be a tough winter for us, but pondering something and experiencing it certainly are different things. 🙂

Like you said, this type of erratic weather is to be expected nowadays, with climate change and other changing conditions. A friend of mine mentioned that El Nino effects could make 2014 one of the warmest years on record as well. I have been having a strong feeling that this will be a very warm year later, so it might be a good time for us to take pictures of the ice and snow, for those times when we’re sweltering later.

I feel most concerned for the birds, wild animals and plants that have to endure these intense weather swings without the benefit of shelter. I am hoping human ingenuity can mitigate against these challenges so that we preserve all of earth’s living beings.

  3. I feel that way when I’m stressed out with everything I have to do. I’ve started taking more breaks, and forcing myself to worry less. Of course it’s only a preventative measure, when I’m already stressed and can’t afford a break I just push myself to finish things on time.

    1. Yeah, there are times when we just have to push through until we’re finished, especially when you are caring for kids and other people. I’ve found worrying doesn’t help much, but it’s sometimes hard to stop. Aaron, hope this week becomes somehow less stressful for you, and a much more fun.

  4. …yes… I don’t like being out of work but I might as well make the most of it… on the plus side, I’ve been walking and exercising more, I’ve started writing an astronomy book and I might be able to work at the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium 🙂

    1. This seems to be a challenging time for a lot of people. It sounds like you are making the most of your time and doing some fairly exciting new projects despite everything. Good luck with everything! 🙂

  5. I can’t really imagine how bitter this cold is, day after day, but I just love the way you’ve chosen to make the best of it. I hope that looking forward to your wonderful summer trip gives you a “warm” focus. I’m still shaking my head at the idea of -50 degrees! I would think your breath would freeze!

    1. This has been an unusual winter. I went out in the cold when it was about -35 with windchill and it felt like my breath was freezing as well as the blood in my arms. It was a strange feeling.

We’re about to get 5 to 9 inches more of snow on Saturday, and then more again on Tuesday night. I don’t remember a winter in my lifetime when it was as cold and snowy as this one. It went up to 20 degrees today and it felt like a heat wave. I’m going to have to take some pictures after the next series of storms come through.

California certainly sounds good about now!
