Wednesday Author Spotlight: Mary Oliver

On Monday, I shared Mary Oliver’s Wild Geese poem as my meditation for this week, and it continues to be a good poem for this particular week.  I heard from a few of you that it was helping you too.  You can hear Mary Oliver reading that poem in the video above.  You can see her in an interview for O magazine here.

I also found this quote on Goodreads from Mary Oliver:

“Instructions for living a life.
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”

I love the poetry of Mary Oliver.  She calls herself a praise poet in the Oprah interview with Maria Shriver.   I find so much of what she writes to be elegant, deep and inspiring.

I also like that she was a quiet poet for a long time, and did not give many interviews.  She let the words of her poetry speak for themselves.

It seems in today’s world, so many writers are encouraged to spend more time working on creating their marketing platform than actually writing. It’s refreshing to know that it is possible to spend your life focused on the writing rather than the acclaim, and still be heard in the world.

Today’s contemplation:

Do you have a favorite poet who inspires you?

    1. Hi Debra, I am not as familiar with Stanley Kunitz as I should be. Looking at his bio and your recommendation, I’m sure that I should be. So, I’m going to take a look at his work this spring. Thanks so much for your comment! 🙂
      Have a great weekend!
